BERLIN-The authorities said that an attack on the crowded central train station in the German city of Hamburg left many people who were injured, some of whom are in life-threatening. A woman was arrested as a suspect.
The attacker targeted people on the platform between the 13 and 14 tracks at the station at about 6 pm, according to the police. The station in the center of Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, is a major center for local and regional trains and the long distance.
Late Friday evening, the firefighting service in Hamburg said that 17 people in total were injured-four of them suffering from life-threatening injuries. The German news agency DPA reported that six others were seriously injured, and the remaining seven were light injuries.
Police said that a 39 -year -old woman, a German citizen, was arrested at the scene of the accident without putting resistance and that she believes after watching the video clips that they acted alone. They secured the knife.
Police spokesman, Florian Abinsith, said there was no immediate indication of any political motive, and the investigators were looking at whether the suspect might be mentally ill.
A high -speed snow train with its doors was still on the platform hours after the attack, but ABBENSTH said it was not the scene of the crime.
Deutsche railway operator said that it was “shocked” from the attack. Four tracks were closed at the station on Friday evening, and some trains were delayed or converted.
Weapons carry, including knives, at the station and in local transport in Hamburg.
The office of the Counselor Friedrich Mirz said that the German leader felt dismay from the news, and he told the Mayor of Hamburg Peter Catcher in a call on Friday evening, “My thoughts with the victims and their relatives.”
